THE INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

Saturday, June 26, 2010

Hello girlies!!

I am WAY too excited to reveal some exciting news! I have been accepted to an internship with Bel Ami headbands. As most of you know, fashion is my ultimate passion, and I am beyond thrilled to be working with Bel Ami.

Bel Ami's Summer Headbands 2010
Bel Ami, founded by Erin Fitzpatrick is a headband company which creates handmade hair accessories which any girl on Gossip Girl would be sporting! The pieces consist of basic black bands to rosettes, bead appliques and crystal clips; all must have hair accessories for the uber-stylish girly girl. Bel Ami's headbands sell across Toronto, in boutiques such as "Fashion Crimes" on Queen st. Recently, Bel Ami has even taken on school headbands, creating beautiful hair accessories for students of Toronto private schools.

I will be documenting my experience through my point of view, and hopefully I can show what there is to know about first-time internships!

PART 1 - THE INTERVIEW

I had planned to meet with Erin (founder of Bel Ami) for quite some time, and I was most definitely anticipating my chance at this amazing opporotunity. I had never been interviewed for an internship before, and I wasn't quite sure what to expect. However, I did bring the essentials that you should bring to any interview: a pen, my resume, starbucks (haha, just kidding about the last one)!

Erin was super sweet & asked me a few questions about myself. I was able to introduce myself and my passion for fashion, and it seemed to go well from there. I started to understand what the business was about, and it just made me all that much more excited to work there!
Next thing you know it... I was hired!

Interviews are definitely important because this is your first impression; either make it or break it - my best advice is to be prepared and to truly show who you are.

PART 2 - MY FIRST DAY!!

My first day was a great first day, where I began training. I learned how to make a base (the fabric which goes onto the headband), as well as some triple bows! I had a ton of fun - but I was quite careful becuase I was sure as NOT going to mess up! One problem of mine was always that I rushed, however this time, I made sure to take my sweet time - the product ends up much better.

That morning, I wasn't sure what to wear! I was most likely to meet up with my mother later, and I wasn't sure what I would be doing within my first day - who knew, maybe I would have to get coffee, or something like that. So, I tried my best to look presentable; but not too uptight! The atmosphere I'm in mostly revolves around the studio, so it is important to make sure you are comfortable (this way it's easier to craft head pieces). Also, it was super hot that day - so, I opted for a grey summer dress, and decided to dress it up with some large crystal necklaces and bracelets - in pretty greens & pinks! To complete the look - I added my satin black bow headband by Bel Ami!

I actually got to help make this my first day! LOVE IT!

RACHSPEED on YOUTUBE

Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Hello everyone!

I never properly introduced my Youtube channel, so I'd like the chance to do that now! Soon after my RachSpeed blog hit the net, I was told that I should dive into the world of Youtube! I've been watching beauty gurus on Youtube for a while & I decided to take a stab at it!

My Youtube Channel!

I figured I could mix it up a little bit & do some of my posts in video medium - this way there'll be some variety on my blog!
You can find me at the user name, Rachspeed!

If you want to know when the latest rachspeed videos are coming up, subscribe!

Anywhoo, besides working on my youtube, I went to the usual downtown lunch where I experimented with my camera; here is my outfit of the day:

Sandals: Gap , Top: Forever 21, Skirt: Club Monaco, Bag: Urban Outfitters, Sunglasses: Forever 21

I absolutely love this loose slouchy top, it will definitely be in upcoming posts! I've been meaning to do a few fashion posts, however it's been quite terrible weather so I haven't. It's way too humid and rainy - so when the sun shines again, I will do more posts!

Stylish Besties

Saturday, June 19, 2010

Helloo!

Friday night, I went to a bbq to celebrate Jess's birthday (she's absolutely gorgeous)! Every single girly there was absolutely stylish - a running theme which I saw was the ever stylish jean shorts! cut offs are amazing, and completely perfect for a bbq!

I would've loved to post all the photos, however I forgot to ask for permission from some of the girls to post photos of them on my blog (and some were camera shy!) - so I'll post the ones that got the okay-go! :)

birthday girly!

These were some great sandals, my friend, Julia was sporting - I honestly thought they were from Anthropologie - but they're actually Old Navy! So gorgeous!

The besties, always featured here!

A QUICK TIP: did you know you can wash converse?! I bought these white converse last year, and they were practically gray. I put them through the wash, and they turned out practically brand new. I chose white ones last year because I could bleach them, while coloured converse I could not.

clean and white! :)

It was a blast! Will post soon. A huge happy birthday shout out to the gorgeous Jess!

Love, Rach

A Night to Remember

Sunday, June 13, 2010

Hello!

Saturday night, I went to a bat mitzvah of someone whose practically a sister, Elan! I decided to take advantage of dressing up & took some photos to share!

My sister & I were decked out in Anthropologie! It's the more whimsical, sister store to Urban Outfitters. My sister opted for some fun strappy Versace heels, while I wore these amazing tie-dye Miu Miu's. Also, I decided to wear my hair up! I just put it into a look chignon with a clip & an elastic. I was kind of trying to go for Lauren Conrad's ever-stylish updo.

And here are some photos from that night! Enjoy!

The girls, decked out in designer, of course. (The girl of the night, gorgeous in purple)

Recognize my style star below?

Dressing Up & Getting Ready

Thursday, June 10, 2010

Hello!

So during this hectic time of year, we have a few big school events which require us to get ready, dress up & dance - three things I don't mind doing. I love getting ready & having somewhere special to go! We had a big party to celebrate the wonderful athletic programs we have at my school - and with no doubt in my mind, I decided to attend!

I opted for a fun zippery dress I bought at Forever 21, only fifteen dollars! It reminded me of an old collection by Phillip Lim. To keep up with the modern look, I paired it with my Marni heels. Kept my hair straight & makeup simplistic to make the dress stand out.

Floral, Purple, Pretty

Who doesn't love getting ready with a bestie?! One of my best friends, Claire also looked gorgeous in a pretty floral number. Floral is definitely a trend for this season. The focal point of the dress is the jewelry, so it did not need much jewelry. With pretty soft curls & pink lips, Claire was definitely ready to go on a night in the town. This dress could also be paired with a jean jacket and a cute pair of flat sandals for a day of shopping!

& when looking cute, you always have to have your own little photoshoot!

My other bestie, Nicole (always look pretty) wore a gorgeous maxi dress which she paired with bangles and a half updo! Check it out here:

Anywhoo , Enjoy!

A Day at the Shops & Mac Warehouse Sale (Youtube Vid!)

Saturday, June 5, 2010

Hello!

So today I had a nice lunch/dinner at shops at Don Mills. It was quite filling! We stopped by McEwans and grabbed some ready-to-go food. I chose truffle mac & cheese (mac & cheese, my fave!) while my brother, Matt, opted for sushi. I absolutely love shops at Don Mills, it has a great variety of stores; Anthropologie, Aritzia, Roots... much more!

Here are some photos from my day:

Sushi makes Matt happy!

On Friday, my sister & aunt went to the Estee Lauder sale. This sale sells Estee Lauder, Clinique & Mac cosmetics - for essentially half the price. Unfortunately, it is invitation only, but if you are one of the lucky ones to attend, it's a great deal! Mac cosmetics prices are slashed 20-50% off, sometimes even more. My sister & I created a video so she can share her steals! Pictures of items will be shown below.

Items I forgot to photograph are the makeup bags & the lip products, but those can be seen in the video!

All in all, I had an amazing day and received some AMAZING NEWS! Once I get the okay-go, I'll share it :). I simply can't wait.

xxoo have a fantastic day!

My Favorite Little Jewels

Thursday, June 3, 2010

Hello everybody!

I know it's been way too long ... and it's been so difficult to come up with posts lately! Give me feedback at my e-mail, rach@rachspeed.com

So... I've been wearing a TON of jewelry lately... mostly pretty silver pieces. I wanted to share with you my fave pieces of the moment!

SPEED LOOK OF THE MOMENT: Silver chains, cutsey animals, pretty charms

I've been aching for a double ring lately... my sister actually bought this at Forever 21, and it was love at first sight! It bonds two of my latest obsessions in to one look; metal animals and double rings! Aren't the birds just precious? The ring was also comfortable, although it was slightly restricting.

Another trend which I have been wearing is the piling on of bracelets. Anything silver & pretty, I've completely covered my right wrist. For a short of colour, I added my evil eye bracelet.
Enjoy!
Love, R. Speed
